What is a SPIFF program?
SPIFF stands for Sales Performance Incentive Fund (or, in some industries, Special Performance Incentive for Field Force). It is a cash bonus or reward a brand pays directly to retail associates for selling a specific product — usually a new launch, a priority SKU, or a SKU the brand needs to clear.
SPIFFs exist because retail associates influence the in-store purchase decision more than any other channel lever. A customer who walks into a specialty retailer asking about a category will, most of the time, walk out with whatever the associate recommends — and SPIFFs shape that recommendation.
How traditional SPIFF programs work
In a traditional SPIFF, the brand promises associates a reward for each qualifying unit sold. Associates (or store owners) self-report sales, the brand's field team or retailer admin verifies, and payouts go out weeks later via check or retailer-run gift card.
The model works, but it has three weaknesses: payouts are slow (hurting motivation), verification is manual (introducing fraud and leakage), and the brand has limited visibility into what actually happened at the store level.
Modern SPIFF programs with AI verification
Newer platforms replace the manual parts of a SPIFF with an app. Associates snap a photo of the receipt, AI verifies the product, store, and amount, and the associate is paid instantly through Venmo, PayPal, Interac, or Wise. Brands see verified sell-through on a live dashboard.
