What is retail execution?
Retail execution covers everything that has to be true in-store for a brand's sales and marketing plan to actually work: the right products on the shelf, the right price on the shelf tag, the right POP display in the right spot, the right associate trained on the right selling points, and the right promotion running on the right date.
Great brand strategy plus poor retail execution loses to average strategy plus great execution, every time. That's why field sales teams, merchandising agencies, and retail-execution platforms exist.
The retail execution loop
Retail execution works as a loop: plan (what should be true in-store), deploy (push displays, training, and promotions out to stores), verify (did the store actually execute?), and correct (get reps or campaigns to the stores that didn't).
Historically, verification happened via field rep visits or third-party mystery shoppers. Today, brands increasingly crowdsource verification from the associates already on the floor — asking them to submit photos, quick surveys, or display check-ins through their phone in exchange for cash or points.
